Ceramic workshop by Maria Moldovan
Schedule: April 6 , Saturday 10 am – 5 pm / April 7, Sunday 10 am – 6 pm
Ceramic workshop with the main focus on the creative process of building ceramic
sculptures and on various hand-building techniques. Maria Moldovan ceramic artist will also present ideas and demos to create simple functional pieces.
Emphasis will be on soft slab building and pinch pot techniques and how to combine these two in order to achieve the desired shape in your composition.
Students will receive templates to create their functional pieces, but for your sculptural piece please bring your creative mind and imagination. It’s beneficial if you plant the seeds of ideas before you come to the workshop and bring with you a good load of imaginary narratives, ideas, thoughts, dream-like and unusual associations.
Maria will present her body of work through images and she will talk about her inspiration and creative process, but it’s great if the participants have an idea, composition to develop.
During the first day participants will create their pieces out of clay adding a rich surface finish in form of texture and carving. Sunday students will use their ready made bisque fired pieces to apply some of the finishing techniques used by the artist. Maria will present her approach of coloring using her own bisque fired pieces. Participants will have to possibility to learn about how to use and combine underglazes and glazes on a ceramic surface.
We do recommend to add texture (using stamps or any other object when the clay is still fresh), carvings (using a sharp pin tool) to the pieces that you prepare ahead for coloring.
Maria will also present a short slide show about her artistic journey started 25 years ago in Romania.
Maria Moldovan received her bachelor degree in ceramics at the University of Visual Arts and Design, Cluj-Napoca, Romania. She moved with her family in Canada 10 years ago and now she is working as a full time studio artist in her home-based studio in Arnprior, Ontario www.moldovanmaria.com.
